Girl’s Weekend in the Big Easy

My girl and I spent a few days in the Big Easy with one goal in mind, eating our way through the French Quarter.  While we ate fabulous food, had great shopping, and saw all the ‘special’ street entertainers we could absorb, spending time with my girl was the highlight of the trip.

I won’t show you ALL the food we consumed, it’s a little embarrassing.  I will show you the highlights of our time together.  Our first dinner was at a little courtyard cafe named “Cafe Amelie”.

Run, don’t walk to Amelie’s.  Service was impeccable,  food was too good to be true.

The first picture was our appetizer, Cajun Poutine.  Thick wedge fries, smothered in mozzarella, and top with Cochon.  Cochon is a slow roasted pull pork.  Combine the pulled pork, with the mozzeralla and thick fries, well, I don’t think I need to say anything else.

The middle picture was Paige’s dinner, Organic Pork Chop with Corn Maque Chow, served over grits and green beans.  Does that not look delicious?!  The pork chop was falling off the bone.  My baby girl was very pleased with her dinner.

The last picture was my dinner,  ‘Redfish with Crawfish Crepe Sauce’.  It was cooked to perfection.  If I could eat that crepe sauce everyday, I would.  I still dream about it.

After our dinner, we walked to Cafe Beignet.

Who can say no to Beignets?  Not these two girls.  We inhaled them along with the powdered sugar.  Look how happy my baby girl is!

Our following day found us having lunch at “Borgne“, owned by the fabulous John Besh.  If you know me, it is no secret that I am a HUGE fan of Besh.

The restaurant itself is very minimalist in style.  Who needs a lot of decor when the food is the star!  We loved the wall of oyster shells.  It was so simple but so very stylish and exactly what you would expect from Besh.

The top right picture was Paige’s meal, Stuffed Flounder.  You can see the look of contentment on her face.

The bottom left was my meal, Fried Catfish smothered in Tomato Gravy and Cajun Rice.  Oh me oh my but I want more and I want it NOW!

The bottom right picture was our appetizer, Slow Smoked Pork Enchiladas with white barbecue sauce.  I know we had pulled pork the night before, but these babies couldn’t be passed up.  If you go to Borgne, get the Empanadas….and I mean it!

Southern Candymakers is know for their pralines.

We stuck to our guns and only got pralines.  I got the regular praline and Paige got the Sweet Potato Praline.  They were so…..good…..really…….good.

I love my girl.  She loves to laugh, she loves to have fun, and she loves to eat!

Our next stop was Laura’s Candies.  Again, I could have eaten everything in this shop but I didn’t bring my fat pants, so I had to restrain.  I have got to start remembering to pack my ‘special’ pants.

On Magazine Street, there is a shop that truly is a wonderland, where all your wishes really do come true.  It is named, “Sucre”.  The best Macarons you will ever put in your mouth.

I thought I was just going to have a spell right there in the store lobby when I walked in.  Look at those colors, look at those Macarons!

We settled on Chocolate with edible gold and Salted Caramel.  The big drawback is that they are only 2 bites, 3 at the most.  They were so light and flavorful.  One day, I will master the art of Macarons.  Until then. I will have to travel back to Sucre and fill my need.

Okay, you can’t leave New Orleans without going to Cafe DuMonde.

It’s iconic, it never changes, sugar is always all over the floor, and I will never ever say no to a Beignet from Cafe DuMonde.

There is a debate in food blogger land over the best beignets in New Orleans.  Some say Cafe Beignet is the best, others say Cafe DuMonde.  I am team Cafe DuMonde all the way!  The beignets literally melt in your mouth.  I want one every morning with my coffee for the rest of my life.  Of course, if that happens, I will have to get bigger fat pants.

We stopped at a sidewalk cafe for a snack because, you know, we had not eaten enough food, and the waitress brings a glass out to all the tables.  From a distance, it look like the glass was filled with sweet potatoes fries.  When we realized it was BACON, we squealed with delight!!!!

One of the many, many, many cups of coffee we consumed. New Orleans is a great place to sit with a cup of coffee and do a little 'people watching.'

Speaking of people watching………….

And these are just the ones I can post in public.
